Design duo Catherine Teatum and Rob Jones visit a Merino wool farm and learn about the natural fibre used within their prize winning designs.
“It was amazing to be on a wool producing property to see the passion and dedication woolgrowers have towards the fibre and their animals,” said Teatum of the visit. “As designers we have a lot in common with woolgrowers as we use both traditional and modern technology to create a product for a specific market, a season and of course a price. It’s great to have us all linked by the one great natural fibre.”
Following a global search that nominated 41 emerging womenswear designers from across the world British label Teatum Jones was chosen as the winner at a final event staged during New York Fashion Week in February. Using fine Australian Merino wool for their winning collection, the design duo partnered with a specialist guipure lace mill in France, convincing them to use wool for the first time in a particular way to create innovative and vibrant geometric Merino laces. The designers then developed a stretch wool that feels similar to a scuba suit, upon which they bonded the Merino lace, creating a luxurious lace fabric that performs as a structured tailoring cloth.

The International Woolmark Prize celebrates outstanding fashion talents from across the globe who showcase the beauty and versatility of Merino wool. First held in 1953 as an initiative of the International Wool Secretariat, the award was won the following year by then relatively unknown and now iconic fashion designers Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. Today, the International Woolmark Prize continues to recognise design excellence using Australia's preeminent natural fibre. The prize crosses borders and cultures to spotlight young fashion stars from hotspots in more than 60 countries before a who's who of the international fashion industry.
