OK, so the word ‘sins’ has much more sinister connotations than where we’re actually going here. But those four little letters do help to suggest that the carefully selected coat can be thrown over the most haphazard or simplest of outfits to bring a certain finish to a look, and let’s be honest – make winter packing a whole lot easier.
The type of coat we’re thinking of is the one that is cut just so; it has the right kind of lapels that seem to elongate the body while framing the face, and it’s probably in that indefinably perfect shade that seems to work with everything else in your wardrobe (but not black this time – give it a rest, or at least try to).
At Max Mara’s autumn/winter ‘15/’16 collection Insta-model Gigi Hadid was Marilyn Monroe incarnate with her tan wool coat draped around her shoulders. On the streets of Paris, models like Fei Fei Sun (pictured above) run about between shows in classic coats cut away from the figure – the large pockets all the better to warm the hands on cold days. The message? Choose a luxurious coverall you’re never going to want to take off. No need to mind what else is underneath.
It’s time to make like Madonna and embrace men’s tailoring
